Between 100 and 600 C.E., Rome underwent significant cultural and political changes. Culturally, the empires religious beliefs had changed, resulting in the predominance of Christianity. Politically, Rome’s economy divided. As for continuities, paterfamilias and women’s right remained the same throughout the time period. Religion was a large part of the roman culture, and made a major change to Christianity. When Rome was still n early empire, Paganism, where there was a belief in multiple gods, was the main religion. Initially the poor were the first to switch to Christianity, which later spread to the higher classes of society. The religion was rejected in 100 C.E., but Constantine legalized it in 313 C.E. The Roman Empire was quickly enveloped by Christianity and took over the other religions. A major political change was the division of the once united Roman Empire into the Byzantium to the East, and Rome remaining in the West. Rome was so massive that under one ruler, it was impossible to make everyone happy, which led to dividing the empire. Because of economic and leadership issues, Germanic tribes tried to take over the land to the east and west. Rome had to split its force to fight them, ultimately adding to the chaos that divided the empire. Women’s right had remained constant throughout the time period. Unlike in China and India women, mainly of the upper class, would have a larger participation in business and work. Woman were able to attend schooling together or similar to men at public schools, and attended religious and social events. Paterfamilias was another continuity in 100 to 600 C.E. Rome. The male father had complete control over his family, and his children’s full lives. This included occupations, spouses, possessions, he could even legally kill them.

Classical Hollywood Style Essay

‘Classical Hollywood cinema possesses a style which is largely invisible and difficult for the average spectator to see. The narrative is delivered so effortlessly and efficiently to the audience that it appears to have no source. It comes magically off the screen.’ John Belton, film scholar, Rutgers University Classical Hollywood narrative refers to the filmmaking tradition established in Hollywood during the 1920s and 1930s. It became the dominant style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some challenges to it in recent years, it remains the accepted style for most Hollywood films today. The Hollywood style is so effective in convincing us what we see on the screen is real that we often have to forcibly remind ourselves that it is ‘only a movie’. Oddly Hollywood, so often associated with everything that is fake, is also the home of classical narrative realism. ‘Tinsel town’ has spent a fortune every year since the 1920s faking realism. What are classical Hollywood narrative films? Classical Hollywood narrative films have plots that progress through time in a linear way, are based on character-driven action and use the continuity editing style (see page 233). The style is ‘classical’ because it is based on the classical principles of literature and art. A work is described as classical if it has perfect balance and symmetry. It must also be clear, simple and free of excesses of emotionalism or irrelevant detail. From beginning to end, all elements must be integrated and the resulting sense of harmony should reassure and satisfy the audience. Features of classical Hollywood narrative The Hollywood style takes advantage of the compact people make with the filmmaker when they pay their ticket price. They willingly want to ‘suspend disbelief’ (see page 135). Deep down, people know it is tomato sauce, but they really want to believe it is blood. In a conspiracy with the audience to make movies believable, classical Hollywood narrative has developed the following features. Three-act narrative. Hollywood plots are set out according to the three-act structure of orientation, complication and resolution (see pages 138-9). A situation is presented, a disruption is introduced, and then the resolution ties everything up in a strong closure. Life is not so simple, of course, and actual events rarely have such neat starts or finishes. Even so, the word realism can be applied to Hollywood style because it is based on classic literary narrative realism. Objective storytelling. The audience in a Hollywood film knows more than the characters do. We are able to see what is happening in other places at the same time, and we can see what other characters are doing. In this respect we are god-like – we can see everything! This makes the style of storytelling objective, according to film academics David Bordwell and Kristen Thompson. It also allows us to accept simultaneous time or parallel editing (see page 25). Character driven. The American style of cinema is almost exclusively concerned with individual characters (and stars). This contrasts sharply with the Soviet montage style of filmmaking. The objective of the Hollywood movie is to relate what happens to the characters and whether or not they got what they wanted. The films have strong individual characters who struggle to fulfil their hopes and goals. These characters are arranged in a hierarchy, from hero or protagonist (see page 141) to antagonist and then down to minor characters and supporting cast. Mise-en-scene. One of the most important aspects of Hollywood style is the mise-en-scene (see page 17), whose sole function is to manufacture realism. Time and space. American movies have a strong sense of movement – either through time or through geography. The story movement through time most often follows a straightforward line of episodic events. Flashbacks or flashforwards may be used, but the overall linear direction is strongly maintained. Whether through time or space, movement is totally subordinate to the action, say Bordwell and Thompson. Only the bits that are important to the story are shown. Classical continuity editing. A typical feature film has between 800 and 1200 shots. Editing is designed to render all these shot changes invisible or imperceptible. Editing in the invisible style serves to hide any jumps or discontinuities that would alert the viewer to ‘non-reality’. Following are some of the features of continuity editing (more detail is provided in chapter 2): †¢ Shot progressions in the classical Hollywood style – ELS, LS, MS, CU †¢ Continuity cutting – for example, cutting on action or movement to distract the viewer †¢ Matching techniques to hide cuts – for instance, eyelines are matched †¢ Transitions such as dissolves smooth the remaining joins where necessary †¢ Simultaneous time or parallel editing (crosscutting) †¢ Application of the 18O degree rule †¢ Use of three-point lighting to naturalise appearances †¢ Use of music is subservient to the story – it just reinforces the meaning.

My Car

When I look at my car all I can think about is the future for it and how glorious it will look when I am finished. I drive a carbon steel grey 2013 Volkswagen GET and I love it. Currently I only have a couple of modifications done to it but I have a list of plans for the future, for when I get the money. On my list of modifications, current and future, I can divide the modifications into three main categories; engine power, cosmetic appearance, and handling.Some of the modifications may be in for than one category but all of the modifications lead to my car looking, sounding, and feeling tremendous. Engine power was the first thing I started to work on when I first got my car. First I went too tuning shop and had Leo, the owner of the shop, install an PAR stage 1 refresh which took the car from pH to about pH. That modification really woke the car up making it a little faster and a lot more fun to drive.The next power modification I did was a cat-back exhaust which claimed to give th e car 15 ore horse power but I did not feel any difference. The cat-back exhaust only made the car louder and gave the car a more aggressive look from the back. After the cat- back exhaust I installed an air intake which make the car more fuel efficient, gave it about 5 extra horsepower, and allowed the car to have an awesome blow off sound. The final power modification I have done so far was putting on a three inch downside and a stages refresh which took the car from about pH to about pH.My power edification I hope to get in the future are an intake manifold, larger fuel injectors, Audit re coil packs, a key turbo kit from PAR, and a larger intercooler. For cosmetic appearance I have not done too many things yet but the things I have done made the car look much better and gave it a little bit of my own personal style. The first thing I did for appearance was changing my head light and for light to HID light, this made the car look much more aggressive and gave me better visibility in the night.The next wing I did was tint the windows, I made them very dark in the back I believe it was a 5% tint. After that I painted my grill strips teal and added four teal stickers around the car. Two stickers are on the rear window and the other two are on my rear side windows. For cosmetic appearance that is all I have been able to do so far but I do plan to eventually get new headlights, new taillights, larger wheels, and the lower the car on coil oversee. Handling is the category where I have done very little to affect it.I eave only done two things to affect handling and those two things are lowering springs and new tires. The lowering spring affect handling because they lower the car center of gravity making the car not lean so much in the corners. The tires help handling by allowing the car to get more traction so it does not slide around as much and because the car have more traction it can take corners at a faster speed. I plan to eventually get coil oversee, strong er sway bars, and new wheels. All of those items will help the car handle much better.Looking at my car now makes me think of all the hard work I have put into it and how I look forward to doing a lot more work on it. Out of engine performance, cosmetic appearance, and handling I have done the most work on engine performance and the least work on improving handling. I hope in the next coming year I can save up enough money to do all of modifications I would like to do on my car and when I am finally finished my car will look, sound, and feel amazing. What becomes apparent all too soon, is that the whole of society is on the brink of collapse, and the poor are at the bottom of the heap and have the least chance of surviving. Steinbeck gives them a voice through these fictional characters, and by maintaining a plot that is very true to life, he also makes sure that lessons are remembered and passed down for future generations. The fact that Steinbeck himself was a science graduate who enjoyed a relatively privileged lifestyle in California (Gray, 2004, p. 497) makes this realism all the more admirable, because he must have had to do considerable research to understand the problems faced by people in the situations described in the novel. The portrayals are affectionate, and the fact that both of the grandparent generation are dead before the story gets very far adds to the pathos of the book. In fact there is a great deal of physical suffering, illness and death in The Grapes of Wrath, as if to make it plain to wealthier Americans in later decades just how much suffering took place in recent historical times. People die of cancer, babies are stillborn, and whole families are wiped out by starvation. It is hard to imagine a grittier portrayal of American life. Christians get their ethical principles from the Bible, Church authority, the Holy Spirit, using their conscience and Natural Law (Catholics). The Bible is the main source of where Christian ethical principles come from. It gives us moral guidelines to follow. In Genesis, the Creation story is found which is important to Christians as it shows the intrinsic value of human life. This is significant because humans were made in the image of God and therefore we must do everything that we can to preserve life. Some Christians also believe that God gives and takes away life which makes certain acts such as murder or abortion, wrong. The Bible also contains the Ten Commandments which are found in the Old Testament. These are absolute, deontological and objective which means that they never change no matter the circumstances. Out of the 613 laws mentioned in the Old Testament, this is the main standard that is followed by Christians. As the Bible is the Word of God, Christians follow the laws that are put in place which includes the Ten Commandments. Another example of an ethical principle in the Bible is the parable of the Good Samaritan, which is found in Luke 10: 25-37. Christians use this parable to help to promote equality and as a guideline to show how we should live harmoniously with each other in our communities and make good relationships a priority. Situation Ethics is also used by some Christians as one of the main ethical principles. The main idea of Situation Ethics is to do the most loving thing in a situation. It has four main principles on which it rests on. These are Pragmatism course of action that works, Relativism – you shouldn’t use absolutes e.g. never of always, Positivism – voluntarily choose to have faith that God will guide/help you and Personalism – put people’s best interest first, agape. The New Testament talks a lot about love ethics. In 1 Corinthians 13 and Galatians 5:22-23, Paul teaches the importance of love and throughout many of his other teachings. This gives some Christians the reason to use Situation ethics as an ethical principle. Natural Law is used by Catholics as a main ethical principle. It contains the Divine Law and separated into two precepts known  as the primary and secondary precepts. The primary precepts contain 5 main principles. These are to preserve life, reproduce, worship God, live harmoniously in society and educate the young. The secondary precepts are then put in place to break down the primary precepts to make them more flexible. This makes the precepts easier to use in different situations. Natural Law puts forward the idea that â€Å"good is to be done and evil is to be avoided† which is a part of Christian teachings and therefore used by Catholics as one of the main ethical principles. Forgiveness is another main ethical principle of Christianity. In the New Testament forgiveness is taught as an important principle by Jesus. In Matthew 18:21,22 Jesus tells one of his disciples, Peter that he must forgive his forgive his brother â€Å"seventy times seven† times, meaning that no matter what he must always forgive his brother. Because Jesus taught the importance of forgiveness, Christians puts it forward as a main ethical principle. Christians use the different sources of authority to put forward the main ethical principles of Christianity, the Bible being the main source of authority. These main principles are used in many situations and stay the same. b) Some religious ethics are too rigid for moral decision making (10). There are many different ethical laws in Christianity which come from different sources of authority. However, they are not too rigid for moral decision making. Firstly, absolute rules such as the Ten Commandments provide a means in which we can measure an action. They are straight forward and give a clear guideline therefore making it easier to make a decision in difficult situations. However, it could be said some of the Christian ethics contradict each other as they are many different things said in the Bible which go against each other. In the Old Testament it says â€Å"†¦an eye for an eye† but in the New Testament Jesus say that we must â€Å"†¦turn the other cheek.† This causes a lot of misunderstandings as people wouldn’t be sure on what to do if they were in an argument or a fight. Nonetheless, this does not cause Christian ethics to be rigid because two options are given that can be followed in such encounters. Many of the religious ethics taught in Christianity focuses on love as a central point such as Situation Ethics. The moral value of an action is judged according to the consequences which it produces. This principle is not too harsh as the first priority of others is put first therefore making decisions easier to make. It gives you the  option of choosing the right course of action and encourages coherent calculation of a circumstance to make decisions. Other the other hand, religious ethics can be viewed as rigid as it does not allow cultural relativism such as polygamy or polytheism which could be seen as being intolerant. For example in some countries such as China, still practice capital punishment and therefore would be viewed as wrong and would disagree with Christian ethics. Nevertheless, some religious ethics seem reasonable such as the Golden Rule – treat others in the way you like to be treated. Situation Ethics is an example of this as it puts others best interest first – agape. This means that you would think about what you would do in a situation that would have a good impact on the person involved. It also puts the importance of the sanctity of life as a key principle of Christianity therefore recognising the intrinsic value of human life. Although some religious ethics such as the Ten Commandments may seem strict and arbitrary there are still many Christian ethics that are flexible and rational. Role of the Genes COLEC11 and MASP1 in Embryonic Development Vigneshwaree Sabapathy Mutations in the genes COLEC11 and MASP1 which code for lectin complement pathway proteins have been found responsible for a rare autosomal recessive disorder resulting in abnormal development. This proposes that other constituent proteins may play a role in embryonic development. To this day, the genetic aspects of the stages involved in embryonic development that leads to certain congenital disorders are still not fully understood. As a result, researchers start off with identifying the genes that play a part in causing a congenital disorder before determining how these genes bring about the disorder. This approach was adopted by Rooryck et al.1 to help prove that mutations in the genes COLEC11 and MASP1, involved in the lectin complement pathway were responsible for 3MC syndrome. The 3MC syndrome is an abbreviation of Michels, Mingarelli, Malpuech and Carnevale syndrome. These four syndromes are rare autosomal disorder that follows a recessive order of inheritance. The 3MC syndrome is characterised by blepharophimosis, ptosis of the eyelids, cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, hypertelorism and in some cases renal anomalies and umbilical hernia1,2. Furthermore, growth retardation, mental retardation and urogenital anomalies are also common features in all four syndromes2,3. After much research, it was found that the overlapping similarities in phenotype and Gestalt between these four syndromes are more significant than the differences between them2. Therefore, these evidence lead to the assumption that the syndromes are allelic variations of one another and belong to the same spectrum2. Rooryck and colleagues started off their study by first collecting DNA samples from individuals diagnosed with Michels, Mingarelli, Malpuech and Carnevale syndromes and all their available family members. Their genomes were then screened for single nucleotide polymorphisms which are homozygous in all affected individuals but absent in unaffected individuals. From the individuals tested, there were four consanguineous families. The genotyping results from members of these families showed a homozygous region of 2.2 MB at 2p25.3 in affected individuals1. Moreover, a region of homozygosity was found in two other families at 3q27.31,4. These findings suggest that the 3MC syndrome could be caused by multiple genes. From the sequencing of the open reading frames at the 2p25.3 region, 15 candidate genes were found, of which 9 were sequenced. Sequencing of these transcripts in affected individuals revealed three homozygous missense mutations and a single base deletion in COLEC11 that may be linked to the inheritance of the 3MC syndrome. Furthermore, the single base deletion in COLEC11 was found to play a role in the premature termination of the gene product CL-K1. CL-K1 is a C-type lectin that acts as a host defence by binding to carbohydrate antigens on microorganisms and activating the innate immune system5,6. Due to its function, it tends to circulate in the serum. In addition, being highly conserved in various species means that a mutation would be damaging to the function of the protein. Hence, to ensure that this mutation is an underlying cause of the 3MC syndrome, a protein blot assay was conducted to detect CL-K1 in the serum from two affected individuals. However, none was detected, indic ating a connection between the syndrome and the loss of function mutation in COLEC11. At the same time, the expression of CL-K1 was observed in certain mouse tissues that have been known to be affected by the disorder in humans1. In the same way, sequencing at the 3q27.3 region found 16 candidate genes potentially linked to the 3MC syndrome. One of these genes is the MASP1 gene which encodes for mannan-binding lectin serine protease 1 (MASP-1), a serine protease that is important in the lectin complement pathway4. Rooryck et al.1 then sequenced this gene in the two affected families and discovered two homozygous single base substitutions in exon 12. As predicted, the loss of function of this gene is consistent with the inheritance of 3MC syndrome. To study the effect of the loss-of-function of these proteins as well as to ensure that both the COLEC11 and MASP1 genes are accountable for the abnormalities witnessed in 3MC syndrome, knockdown studies were conducted using zebrafish. In these studies, two antisense morpholinos for COLEC11 were injected into one-cell stage embryos of zebrafish so as to imitate the loss-of-function of the gene. The same was done for the MASP1 gene. Based on the results from these studies, COLEC11 and MASP1 genes were found to cause similar phenotypes. The zebrafish morphants subjected to both these treatments displayed morphological abnormalities such as pigmentation and craniofacial cartilage defect similar to the symptoms of 3MC syndrome. Interestingly, when co-injected with a fully functional COLEC11 mRNA, the observed abnormalities in the zebrafish are reversed. Additionally, injecting a low dosage of both colec11 and masp1 morpholinos into the zebrafish embryos at the same time gave rise to simi lar deformities observed when injected separately, suggesting an interaction between the two genes5. Thanks to the pigmentation and craniofacial cartilage defects noted in zebrafish morphants, further studies were carried out to determine whether the CL-K1 and MASP-1 proteins are involved in the migration of cranial neural crest cells (NCCs) during embryonic development. Findings by Rooryck et al.1 in this part of the study revealed that beads coated with CL-K1 attracted NCCs when placed in the head region of zebrafish embryo. On the other hand, control beads implanted in the same region did not display the same attraction to NCCs. This proves the possibility that CL-K1 play a role in guiding the migration of neural crest cells. Similar results were also seen in a test using CL-K1 agarose disk and HeLa cells. At present, since the roles of both the COLEC11 and MASP1 genes in embryonic development have been discovered, more focus is required in investigating how the lectin complement pathway regulates embryonic development in addition to the role of the gene product, CL-K1 in early developmental processes. Likewise, the possibility of other constituent proteins and complement systems being involved in embryogenesis should also be considered.
